Copenhagen unveiled its list of summer events. The tradition of Sankt Hans Eve, or Midsummer's Eve, on June 23 marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, when the sun stays up until about 10 p.m. in Copenhagen and even later in the north of Denmark. The city celebrates with bonfires on the beach, singing, dancing and more. Annual Sankt Hans celebrations also take place in Fælledparken, Charlottenlund Fort and along the coast of North Sealand just north of the city.
The Start! Festival (June 10 to 12) in the Vesterbro neighborhood of Copenhagen. Attracts more than 30,000 people, including pop music industry insiders and more than 100 acts.
The Roskilde Festival (July 1 to 4) takes place 20 minutes west of Copenhagen in Roskilde, the site of Northern Europe's biggest outdoor music festival, featuring 150 acts from around the world. This year's headliners include Alice in Chains, Gorillaz, Jack Johnson, Motörhead, Muse, Pavement, The Prodigy, Patti Smith, Them Crooked Vultures and more to be announced every week right up until the festival date. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival (July 2 to 11) fills the city with music performed by international stars at venues large and small. This year's "Giant Jazz" headliners include Herbie Hancock, Caetano Veloso and the Joshua Redman Double Trio, plus special appearances by Diana Krall, Elvis Costello, Bill Frisell, John Abercrombie, Richard Bona, Joe Lovano, Marcus Miller, Palle Mikkelborg, Jason Moran, the Danish Radio Big Band and Marilyn Mazur and many others.
