New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC & Company announced Thursday that the city welcomed a record-breaking 58.3 million visitors in 2015.

NYC & Company President and CEO Fred Dixon reported that New York City's total of 58.3 million visitors last year was 1.8 million more than 2014, with the overall estimate consisting of 46 million domestic and 12.3 million international travelers.

Not only did New York City break its all-time visitors record in 2015, but the domestic and international travelers numbers also broke their respective previous records. A byproduct of the success was also an increase in hotel rentals, and the city setting yet another record with 33.7 million hotel room-nights sold.

Another sector of the tourism industry that thrived was meetings and conventions, with a record 6.1 million delegates visiting last year. Add that to the 12.3 million business travelers who visited New York City in 2015, and it was a bountiful year for the city.

Mayor de Blasio released a statement about the record-breaking numbers:

"Through the hard work of NYC & Company, and their support of the City's various attractions-from restaurants to the performing arts and more-2015 marked a new milestone for NYC tourism. As the safest and most exciting big city in America, we have so many rich offerings that continue to make the five boroughs a global draw."

Dixon also released a statement about New York City's tourism success in 2015:

"We are pleased to see a sixth year of tourism growth in New York City as we welcomed 58.3 million visitors last year. The City continues to evolve, always offering fresh reasons to visit again and again, with more new developments on the horizon. However, with the continuing pressure on the global economy and the strengthening dollar, we will all need to work even harder in 2016 to sustain our competitive edge."
