On Tuesday, travel media company Lonely Planet released its 2016 list of the top 10 best places to visit in the United States, with Philadelphia finishing at No. 1 in the rankings.
According to Lonely Planet's official website, this is the sixth consecutive year the company has produced the list, which uses a diverse mix of cities, regions and states that are selected by the editors and travel writers from the website based in America.
To compile the list, the company's editors and writers were looking for locations that are expected to thrive over the coming year, but that are still often overlooked when booking vacations. While Philadelphia deservingly took the No. 1 spot in the rankings, the city was followed by Natchez, Mississippi, at No. 2 and Yellowstone National Park at No. 3 overall.
Lonely Planet U.S. destination editor Rebecca Warren released a statement about the list, saying, "These are the places to pay attention to in 2016. Whether they've been on the public radar for years or are only recently emerging as travel hotspots, each destination offers compelling reasons to visit this year."
