The battle against sargassum continues in Playa del Carmen as officials are evaluating six proposed projects to fight the seaweed along Riviera Maya beaches.
According to Riviera Maya News, Environmental Department director Angel Duran Desiga is intrigued by all of the projects, but especially those that focus on not only stopping the sargassum while still in the water but also collecting and preventing it from reaching the beach.
Duran Desiga did not provide additional details about the plans, but he did acknowledge at least three of the projects incorporated the long-term protection and coastal development the local government is pushing for with the process.
"We have projects that include not depositing sargasso on the beach, which when collected, causes wear, but project proposals that include collection in the sea along with maintenance and beach recovery programs," Duran Desiga told the Riviera Maya News.
With only one plan being selected to fund for 2019, part of the decision-making process will include public forums which are expected to begin taking place in January.
One of the companies not involved in the 2019 consideration is Dakatso. Officials said despite the former administration hiring the group to handle the sargassum issues in 2018, a failure to comply work logging requirements has led to pay disputes.
