So officials in Playa del
Carmen, near Cancun in the Mexican Riviera, are clamping down on street vendors
after visitors complained about unfair sales tactics, according to the Cancun
Sun.
Federal law in Mexico
protects Street and beach vendors, but they cannot impede visitors from walking
along the beach without being harassed.
Some vendors have
illegally set up areas near the beaches and hotels, with part of the allure
being lower prices and the ability to negotiate where you could not do so in a
regular brick-and-mortar store.
Sometimes, the vendors
can be overbearing, which is part of why officials are cracking down. Another
reason is that the vendors are considered unofficial businesses.
Officials initially were
going to allow the businesses and vendors so they could make money for their
families, but a compromise could not be reached. Frustrated officials are in
the process of shutting down the unregistered businesses.
Playa del Carmen has
become one of the most popular destinations on the Mexican Riviera, and the government
would like to retain that tourism. Making sure tourists have a pleasant
experience, whether at the beach or in the local shopping malls, is part of the
process.
