The weather is starting to warm up, and the
drive to get outside is rising. Whether you're looking for new mountain trails,
flower gardens, or kayaking, there's plenty to get outside for in the south in
the coming months.
From the rugged peaks of the Blue Ridge to the Spanish
moss-draped coast, these six small towns offer the perfect springtime escape.
Ellijay, Georgia: The Mountain Bike Capital
Known as the "Mountain Bike Capital of
Georgia," Ellijay truly comes alive in the spring. Mountain bikers flock
to iconic routes like the Bear Creek Trail, home to the massive Gennett Poplar
tree. For more technical rides, the Pinhoti Trail and the Ridgeway Mountain
Bike Trail at Carters Lake offer challenging singletrack with stunning ridge
views.
While famous for its fall apples, Ellijay's
spring is marked by blooming flora in the Rich Mountain Wilderness and nearby
Fort Mountain State Park. Visitors can also find rare hybrid daylilies at
Jungle Paradise in nearby Dawsonville starting in March. And Aaron Family
Orchards has started hosting a sunflower and zinnia garden in the springtime.
Bluffton, South Carolina: Lowcountry Charm
Perched on a bluff overlooking the May River,
Bluffton is a coastal dream in the spring. Stroll through the Palmetto Oaks
Sculpture Garden, a one-acre woodland retreat where art blends with nature. In
the historic Old Town, flower boxes overflow with seasonal blooms as you browse
the Bluffton Farmers Market every Thursday. Spring is the ideal time for
kayaking the May River or a scenic boat tour to spot dolphins before the summer
humidity sets in.

Often called the "charming town that is
always in full bloom," Fairhope is a masterclass in spring landscaping.
The Fairhope Municipal Pier serves as the town’s "crown jewel,"
surrounded by sweeping rose gardens and walking trails along Mobile Bay. Don't
miss the iconic floral clock and the hanging baskets that line every street in
the boutique-filled downtown.
Helen, Georgia: Alpine Spring
This Bavarian-style village offers a unique
mountain spring experience. Beyond the tubing season, spring is peak time for
the Anna Ruby Falls hike and mountain biking at Unicoi State Park. The Mount
Yonah Trail is particularly stunning in spring, with wildflowers covering the
mountain as you ascend to panoramic valley views.
