Overnight travelers looking to celebrate the arrival of 2015 in Miami or New York City can expect to pay a hefty price for accommodations this year.
According to a new survey from MiamiHotels.org, Miami hotels are raising their rates by up to 491 percent in some cases for New Year's Eve. Meanwhile, hotels in New York are raising their rates by an average of 167 percent for the year-end holiday, according to another survey from NewYorkHotels.org.
Some hotels in the Big Apple have elevated their rates by more than 300 percent compared to their regular rates.
But the massive rate increases in New York aren't quite as noteworthy in comparison to New Year's Eve 2012, when fewer than 10 percent of hotels in New York had available rooms.
"This significant difference between then and now can partly be explained by the opening up of many new hotels in Manhattan," said NewYorkHotels.org spokeswoman Danielle Carter.
"But essentially it clearly reflects the importance of Airbnb, where thousands of rooms have been booked for New Year's Eve, taking potential clients away from the hotels."
In Miami, fewer than 10 percent of hotels are still offering rooms for New Year's Eve, with those hotels raising their rates by an average of 185 percent. Folks eyeing a celebration in Miami Beach can expect even higher rate increases, however, with the average at 249 percent.
