The master plan to reinvent Las Vegas through big-time sports is about three-quarters of the way complete.
According to construction managers of the new ballpark in Las Vegas that will house the relocated Oakland Athletics franchise, work on the stadium will begin in April 2025 and be completed by January 2028.
That means Las Vegas could have Major League Baseball in time for the 2028 season.
It would also give the city a professional sports franchise in three of the four major sports. Vegas already has a National Hockey League franchise in the Golden Knights and successfully lured the Oakland Raiders to relocate and built them a beautiful new stadium in Allegiant Stadium. In addition, Las Vegas will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix race next month that it hopes will become an annual event. Las Vegas is also the host for the 2024 Super Bowl.
The ability to watch all of these pro sports teams will only enhance the reputation of Las Vegas as a major tourist attraction, not that it isn’t already.
The timeline for the ballpark, it should be noted, is only tentative right now.
The new ballpark in Las Vegas would have a 30-year lease agreement for the Oakland Athletics franchise.
“Whether it’s supporting community needs or ensuring that we are addressing all questions from policy leaders, we are committed to being a strong community partner and contributor,” A’s President Dave Kaval said in a statement.
Via a vote in the Las Vegas Senate, the ballpark will get $380 million in public funds. The ballpark is set for a total cost of $1.5 billion. It will seat 33,000, and it is expected to be an enclosed stadium because of the heat in Las Vegas.
The last stamp of approval has to come from Major League Baseball owners. They will meet and vote on the relocation at baseball’s annual meeting.
Las Vegas Stadium Authority Chairman Steve Hill said: “I think this is going to be another game-changing opportunity for our city. We look forward to the vote from Major League Baseball.”
