Venice continues to crack down on tourists as the city is considering a ban on carrying alcohol in the streets.
According to The Telegraph, the new regulations would call for police to fine anyone who is found carrying alcohol after 7 p.m. local time, even if the booze is inside a bag. The idea is to cut down on drunk tourists who act foolishly in public places.
Venice police chief Marco Agostini said the legislation will be targeted at "someone who goes around drunk and has a bag with three bottles of beer inside." The rule is just part of a series of changes pitched to combat overtourism.
The ban on alcohol could go into effect as early as September, with fines ranging from €150 to €500.
Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro also pitched several different ideas last week to control the impact of tourism, including no pausing on bridges, no swimming in the canals, no bike riding, no feeding birds and no placing love locks on monuments or bridges.
Venice isn't the only Italian city making changes due to overtourism, as officials in Florence have instituted fines of €500 for travelers caught eating on the streets in the city's historic center.
