Stuck in a Smithsonian basement for years, the Star Trek Enterprise has finally been promoted after getting a fresh coat of paint.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum announced that the studio model used in the original "Star Trek" series would now display at the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall.
As the post states, it was a painstaking effort to refurbish the model to its old glory days, which also includes a new lighting system that visitors can enjoy at various times of the day: 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and at 3:00 p.m. local time.
YouTube channel TrekCore was in attendance this week and shot this video with conservator Malcolm Collum who explained a bit more on decisions that affected the Enterprise's light system.
As CNET reports, the ship was donated back in 1974. Since that time it's been hanging around the basement gift shop as if it weren't some magnificent symbol of where millions of fans have gone since the show debuted.
The jubilation coincides with the museum building's 40th anniversary. And we can think of no better way to highlight the museum's ongoing efforts.
This one ship took a massive amount of work, which even included x-ray analysis of the model.
With great care the team has taken decades off the outer coat and restored the Enterprise to its classic finish.
We can almost hear Captain Kirk say, "Mr. Sulu, take us out."
