The Travel Trends Taking Over 2025

As economic uncertainty grows worldwide, travelers still maintain a strong desire to pay for travel experiences, according to the Mastercard Economics Institute's new report on the current trends impacting travel and traveler behaviors. 

Asia-Pacific is the Top Trending Travel Region

The first major trend is the desire to visit the Asia-Pacific. Home to incredible culinary heritages, ancient cultures and some of the world’s largest cities, this region has seen its fair share of popularity in recent years post-pandemic, but it’s the place most travelers want to visit this year. 

Tokyo is the year’s leading summer destination, while other destinations in the top ten include Osaka, Shanghai, Seoul, Beijing and Singapore. Japan is especially popular as its currency has depreciated, which means travelers can save more money visiting now—Tokyo became the most-visited city in 2024. 

And with a stronger American dollar over the past years, more Americans chose to visit international destinations, and this trend is continuing into the beginning of this year. Tokyo alone saw a 51.5 percent growth in visitation by Americans from 2019 to 2024. 

Travelers Invest in Moments, from Wellness to Wildlife

Travelers are increasingly investing in more meaningful travel experiences that inspire and provide deeper insights into their own personal interests, from wellness experiences to wildlife encounters and culinary travel. 

The rise of social media influence and post-pandemic searches for meaning spur travelers to choose their own unique experiences, with consumers prioritizing travel and tourism, outdoor activities and dining as their top spending priorities this year. 

This translates into yoga retreats, luxury spa vacations and other wellness travel experiences in destinations like Namibia, South Africa and Thailand. Adventure travel’s growth is encouraging more visitation to destinations like the Nordic countries and southern African destinations. 

And foodies are flocking to experience new flavors and culinary traditions worldwide, from Istanbul to Beijing and beyond. 

Sports Tourism Grows Globally

Sports tourism is also a growing trend: for example, Japanese spending in Los Angeles surged 91 percent during the 10 days around Shohei Ohtani’s World Series Debut, showing the power of cross-border and global sports to bring people together and boost tourism economies. 

Regardless of the state of economies, sports tourism, especially the larger tournaments and games, will likely draw large numbers of travelers to destinations around the world this year. 

Several sporting events are expected to be popular, like the Champions League final in London, the Copa Libertadores Final in Buenos Aires and the baseball World Series in Los Angeles and New York. 

Business Travel Shifts

Mastercard discovered two main reasons that business travel is changing this year: increased economic uncertainty and hybrid work. 

Business travelers are favoring more regional trips as technology aids international business with virtual meetings and constant communication. Businesses can also reach their sustainability goals by reducing the number of flights they require their employees to make. Geopolitical uncertainty may slow global economic growth, also contributing to a reduction in business travel. 

Corporate travelers are also staying longer, adding in some leisure travel time with their business plans. The average business trip lasts longer than it did pre-pandemic in the U.S. and the U.K., and data suggests that longer trips equate to a lesser number of trips throughout the year.
