Travel insurance and assistance company Allianz Partners USA has identified a new emerging travel trend led by Americans (18-34), the ‘pay-cation.”

Allianz Partners’ 15th Annual Vacation Confidence Index study revealed that three in 10 Americans will choose to work remotely from a vacation destination in 2023. This new work-from-a-vacation travel trend, the ‘pay-cation’ emerged from flexible remote work policies during the COVID pandemic and the trend is extremely popular among young working Americans, going well beyond ‘bleisure’ travel.

The Allianz survey found that 42 percent of respondents in the 18-34-year-old demographic are more likely to work remotely at a travel destination compared to 26 percent of 35- to 54-year-olds and only 12 percent of those 55 and older.

Young Americans are also leading the trend of placing themselves and their mental well-being first in 2023. Among all survey respondents, 39 percent list wellness and self-care a priority while 54 percent of those 18 to 34 placed it as a top priority.

“Younger Americans who spent the early years of their career during the work-from-home era in the pandemic are re-shaping our preferences for the way we work and travel,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA. “While some companies have already returned to in-person work, our findings clearly show that a healthy balance of work and play is here to stay, and prioritizing self-care is going to impact the way Americans view travel and time off the clock.”

In addition to a commitment to their wellness and self-care, younger Americans are more likely to engage in a solo travel experience in 2023 as opposed to older generations. 42 percent of young Americans survey respondents indicated they plan to take a solo trip this year compared to 31 percent of 35-to-54-year-olds and 17 percent of those 55 and older.

Solo travel however can include a companion animal on trips, extending the importance of emotional well-being. 41 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds will opt to bring their pets on vacation compared to 36 percent of 34-to-54-year-olds and only 20 percent of travelers aged 55 and older.
