The overwater bungalow-an iconic must-do getaway for honeymooners and canoodling celebrities around the world-is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
The very first overwater bungalow was built on the French Polynesian island of Raiatea in 1967, by the "Bali Hai Boys." Since then, the idea has been appropriated and replicated around the world, but Bora Bora remains the best-known and most luxurious destination for this distinctive style of accommodation.
To celebrate the anniversary of the iconic overwater bungalow, Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and Pleasant Holidays are rolling special promotions for 2017.

"This is a historic occasion, and we're celebrating the overwater bungalow all year long with this special resort credit," said Maria Jagla, general manager of Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. "These unique accommodations have a come a long way since 1967, and we're proud to offer the ultimate version, full of luxury and comfort, here at Four Seasons."
Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is home to 100 overwater bungalow suites, including 15 that come with their own private plunge pools. Ranging from 1,120 to 2,228 square feet, each is designed in the traditional style with thatched roofs and native Polynesian artworks.
To celebrate the anniversary of the overwater bungalow, Four Seasons has rolled out a special package that includes a resort credit of EUR 1,967 (that's about $2,100) on any stays of six nights or longer. Guests will enjoy a daily buffet for two adults in the Tere Nui restaurant and a "Make Your Own Mai Tai" kit for two adults.The resort credit can be used towards dining, activities or lavish spa experiences.
Or for a totally lavish getaway, the resort has also introduced private jet charters from Los Angeles to Bora Bora. Utilizing the services of Aircraft Logix, travelers can depart from the executive terminals at any Los Angeles area airports, including LAX and Van Nuys, a great way to bypass the headaches of commercial air travel. The charter service is a complimentary, value-added bonus for guests of Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora.
Pleasant Holidays
Also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the overwater bungalow, Pleasant Holidays is offering a special $50 travel agent incentive per booking on all Tahiti destinations, including the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. (Reservations must include a stay in at least one overwater bungalow during the trip.)
"Overwater bungalows with glass floor panels began as the inspiration of three hotel partners in 1967 and have grown to become the iconic must-have accommodation in these romantic islands," said Jack E. Richards, President and CEO of Pleasant Holidays. "Tahiti is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world and Pleasant Holidays is No. 1 in Tahiti vacations worldwide."
Clients can also enjoy a $600 discount per booking on air-inclusive vacations at 18 participating resorts on Bora Bora, Moorea, Tahiti and more, including iconic overwater bungalow accommodations.
To earn the $600 off promotion, vacation packages must be booked by March 26, 2017, and completed by Dec. 31, 2017; the booking requires roundtrip airfare and seven nights' accommodation. The bonus commission can be earned on any new booking made by April 30, 2017, for travel completed by December 31, 2017. There is no bonus cap for travel agents, and the bonus is in addition to the standard commission available on all package bookings to Tahiti, including cruise packages on Paul Gauguin Cruises and Windstar Cruises that incorporate a pre- or post-cruise stay in an overwater bungalow.
