Florida Keys Are Open For Business & These Resorts Are Ready
Hotel & Resort Allison Ramirez May 18, 2018

The Florida Keys is still recovering after last year’s Hurricane Irma.
The storm brought torrential rains, 130-mile-per-hour winds, and knocked down boat slips and buildings in its path. Weddings were postponed and so were dreams of vacationing in a place where Hawaiian shirts and shorts are considered perfectly acceptable “semi-formal” attire.
Even so, I’m happy to say that the island I grew up on (Tavernier and Islamorada, specifically) is back in business and magical as ever. Summer is off-season and I can bet renovated hotels will be offering plenty of discounted rates and special packages in order to revive tourism in the Keys. Below, a few favorites at various price points and why they’re worth visiting now.
Not Your Average Reasonably Priced Key West Hotel (Or Experience)
NYAH, an acronym for 'Not Your Average Hotel', is an adults-only boutique property in Key West just a few blocks from iconic Duval Street. Luckily, the property received no damages from the hurricane and was up and running right after the storm.
I recently visited its sister property in Miami, the Julia, and love that both hotels cater to young adults and groups of friends looking for a cool, affordable boutique experience.
NYAH offers a customizable 'Build Your Own Room' concept including beds that can be converted from a king to a twin with a sofa or two twin beds. The property also offers bunk bedrooms (six bunks per room) for a shared experience—unlike a hostel the price remains the same for the room whether it’s occupied by one or six people—at a fixed nightly rate. NYAH is unique in that it offers complimentary breakfast, three pools, two jacuzzis, bike rentals and a daily 4:20 P.M. happy hour. Did somebody say $2 beers?
Stock Island’s Destination Within a Destination
A little different from the traditional Key West stay (in a good way), the Perry Hotel Key West is in a prime marina-front location, with waterfront balcony views and “boat-to-table” restaurant concepts. The 100-room boutique property, which opened just last year, sustained minimal damage (some palm trees were replaced before reopening the doors) from Irma.
The Perry pays tribute to Key West’s old-school maritime and fishing history with industrial design, direct marina access and, of course, fresh, delicious food. Rooms are dog-friendly and some even feature outdoor showers (swoon!). One of my favorite perks of staying: the Perry recently partnered with Brew Detroit and now offers three signature craft beers on draft inspired by the hotel’s street name and island vibe.
Laidback Luxury at Islamorada’s Moorings Village
You are 100 percent right if, when googling the Moorings Village, you think, “hey, this place looks familiar for some reason.” This pastel-colored hidden oasis in Islamorada is where Netflix’s Bloodline was filmed and considered the best kept secret of the Florida Keys.
But the Moorings—which reopened on January 15th—is more than just a movie set to me. Pictures of its colorful cottages (taken by my mom 15 or so years ago) hang in my parents’ home. Surrounding hotels and restaurants—like Morada Bay, Cheeca Lodge and the Tiki Bar at Postcard Inn—are family favorites and, though we moved from the island almost 17 years ago, still places we love to visit together.
The Moorings offers a one-of-a-kind experience to guests with 18 individual West Indies-style villas ranging from one to three-bedrooms with living rooms, dining rooms and fully-stocked kitchens, newspapers delivered daily and an optional maid service.
The resort’s private beach is pristine and quiet; it’s rare to run into anyone, even other guests, there. Complimentary paddleboards, kayaks, and bikes are available to guests and the front desk can help arrange off-property activities, as well. With renovations come new packages, too, including a romance package (champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, flowers), a sunset cruise package, and a package that allows guests to enjoy a three-course oceanfront dining experience prepared by a private chef.
