Bungalow, a luxury adults-only resort in Key Largo, suffered a fire this morning.
Monroe County firefighters received a call about a fire at the resort at 5 a.m. this morning, and they continued to battle the fire up to10 a.m. The resort, which just opened in December, has extensive damage.
"The restaurant building at Bungalows burned. The entire upstairs burned, and we are still working the scene trying to get to the hot areas," Chief Don Bock with the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department told the Miami Herald on Sunday morning.
There were no injuries reported, and according to the resort, the fire was contained to the Beach House. The cause of the fire is unknown as of right now but there is an investigation underway.
Guest Corey Honabach told the Miami Herald that his wife Donnelle Weiss Honabach had caught sight of the fire that morning and ran into their bungalow to tell him.
"There's only one bungalow between us and the clubhouse," Corey Honabach said. "I went over to the building to see if I could help in any way."
Honabach called 911 as the fire had already gone well beyond what he could do with a fire extinguisher he'd found. Instead, Honabach knocked on doors to wake up the other guests in case the fire spread to the bungalows.
No bungalows were affected, but Bungalows is closed until further notice.
