North Korea's Only 'Six-Star' Hotel Is Not Getting Great Reviews

A six-star rating typically signifies unparalleled luxury. However North Korea's Ryanggang Hotel in Pyongyang, the country's only six-star hotel, is drawing comparisons to a "prison."

The Daily Mail points out that the hotel has taken a beating on TripAdvisor, with only one traveler rating their stay above average. What's more, the most recent review from March 2016 describes the hotel as "old and cold."

"Concrete, cold water showers, rock hard beds and power cuts are all to be expected at this Soviet retro hotel," one guest wrote last year.

Guests complained about every aspect of the hotel for the most part, calling out the lighting, the beds, the food and power sockets, among other things.

Interestingly, it appears the hotel, which seems to be more popular among locals, is benefiting from a lack of competition, because according to the Mail, Kim Jong Un's showpiece Ryugyong Hotel has still yet to open after nearly three decades.

It's unclear how much an average night at the Ryanggang Hotel costs since the hotel doesn't have a website. However the Mail notes that many of the hotel's foreign guests said they booked their stays while visiting Pyongyang on tours.

Either way, it's apparent that the hotel has some work to do if it hopes to improve its 2.5-star rating and live up to its lofty designation.
