Los Angeles reigns supreme when it comes to the title of most spontaneous U.S. city.

According to booking data analyzed by hotel booking app HotelTonight across its top 10 markets by booking volume, the City of Angels sees the highest rate of last-minute hotel bookings.

But not only does L.A. boast the highest percentage of same-day bookings, it also possesses the highest percentage of bookings made after 5 p.m. on check-in day, with 41 percent of same-day hotel bookings in L.A. being made after 5 p.m.

L.A. was followed by nearby Phoenix, but a trio of East Coast metropolises round out the top five as Washington DC, Boston and New York finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

The rest of the top 10 is comprised of mostly warm weather destinations. Las Vegas came in sixth, followed by San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago and Miami.

HotelTonight dove deeper to examine the most popular style of hotel in each aforementioned market. Surprisingly, Boston emerged as the top spot for luxe accommodations, with the category accounting for 30 percent of HotelTonight bookings in Beantown.

Interestingly, San Diego finished last in the luxe category (three percent).

Chicago (45 percent) was determined to be the top market for hip or stylish hotels, more than half of San Diego's (52 percent) HotelTonight bookings are made for properties falling under the solid or reliable category, while basic hotels are most popular in Phoenix (42 percent).

Lastly, HotelTonight looked at the top spots for a "staycation," examining the most visited regions and calculating how many of their bookings were made by customers based within a 50-mile radius.
