Virgin Hotels is bringing its popular lifestyle brand to the nation's capital.
Sir Richard Branson's buzzworthy chain announced Monday that the new-build hotel is scheduled to open in Washington, D.C.'s Union Market neighborhood during fall 2019.
The new hotel will boast 178 guestrooms and suites as well as a handful of amenities. Virgin Hotels dubs the rooms "chambers and grand chamber suites."
Highlights will include a coffee shop, a panoramic rooftop lounge equipped with an infinity pool and several art studios. An outdoor garden will feature more art sculptures from local artists. Art will be a major aspect of the hotel with studios occupying the hotel's second level and alleyway.
The hotel will house multiple food and beverage outlets, including Virgin's flagship Commons Club. Meeting and event space will also be plentiful.
D.B. Lee Development and Construction will develop the property.
"Washington D.C. is in the midst of a cultural renaissance, further establishing itself as a diverse global city that we feel will embrace the Virgin Hotel ethos and lifestyle," said Dennis B. Lee, President of D.B. Lee Development and Construction.
"The Union Market area is representative of that renaissance with significant and eclectic development embracing the historical fabric of the market and community," Lee added. "We feel that Virgin Hotel will not only become a hub of activity in Union Market but will also greatly enhance the cultural growth of the city, potentially becoming an epicenter of creative spirit."
"We are thrilled to bring Virgin Hotels to Washington D.C.'s travelers and residents with an energetic lifestyle hotel experience unlike anything currently offered in the city," Virgin Hotels CEO, Raul Leal said in a statement. "We are excited to be part of the continued evolution and growth of the vibrant Union Market neighborhood."
The Virgin Hotels brand debuted in Chicago during 2015. In addition to Washington, D.C., new properties are poised to open in San Francisco, Dallas, Palm Springs, New York, New Orleans and Nashville in the near future. The company is also eyeing potential hotels in Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, Seattle, Toronto, Montreal and London.
Virgin Hotels Chicago has already been recognized as one of the city's best hotels, and its early success has only boosted anticipation for the brand's upcoming openings. WTOP points out that the Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards named it the No. 1 hotel in Chicago the past two years.
The new D.C. hotel will be one of several projects opening in Union Market in the coming year as the booming area continues to attract residential, culinary and retail businesses.
