On Tuesday, an Aeroflot Airlines plane skidded off the end of a runway in Russia due to ice and snow on the tarmac, leaving several passengers on board injured.
According to The Express, the Aeroflot Airlines flight and the 167 passengers and seven crew members onboard were attempting to land at Khrabrovo Airport in Kaliningrad, Russia, when the plane failed to stop on the runway and plowed into the field 150 meters from the end of the tarmac.
The incident took place at 10:55 p.m. local time.
Officials from Aeroflot Airlines have blamed the airport for not properly clearing the runway of ice and snow before the plane made its landing. As a result of the incident, at least three people required medical attention, and the airport was closed while investigators and clean-up crews handled the situation.
The Aeroflot Airlines plane was forced to deploy its emergency slides and evacuate passengers. Also, the chassis of the Airbus A321 sustained heavy damage as a result of sliding off the end of the runway.
The darkness of night and snowy conditions in the area also played a factor in the incident, which saw the plane overshoot the end of the runway and crash into a snow-covered field.
This isn't the only recent plane to skid off the runway due to snowy conditions. During the Christmas break, the plane carrying the Minnesota Vikings skidded off the taxiway after landing safely at Appleton International Airport in Wisconsin, hours before facing the Green Bay Packers.
