Americans heading to China now have an easier tourist visa application process beginning January 1, 2024.
According to the Chinese Embassy and Consulates-General in the United States, the tourist visa, also called an L-visa, will no longer require travelers to submit their round-trip airfare information, proof of hotel reservation, itinerary or invitation letter during the application process.
Since each L-visa application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, simplifying the process without the info above will make the application process simpler for American travelers and faster for those reviewing the applications.
The U.S. Department of State website on China states that travelers should have a passport with at least six months validity left in order to obtain a visitor visa to China. Travelers heading to Hong Kong or Macau, which are both considered Special Administrative Regions, and also into mainland China can also apply for the ten-year multiple entry visa, which has different requirements.
The country is currently at a Level 3: Reconsider Travel according to the State Department, categorized so because of “the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including in relation to exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detentions.”
In late November, 2023, China announced it had expanded its visa-free tourism program for travelers bearing passports from six additional countries: France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia. It's currently operating on a trial basis through the end of November, 2024.
