Supreme Court to Review Trump Travel Ban

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear President Donald Trump's appeal of a decision that he overstepped his authority by restricting entry into this country for people from six mostly Muslim countries.

According to Bloomberg, the Supreme Court's decision to hear the case means there could finally be a definitive ruling on the matter, which has been bounced around in courts since the president signed the first version of the ban just after his inauguration in 2017.

The court is scheduled to hear arguments in April, Bloomberg reported.

The Justice Department has argued that federal immigration laws "confer sweeping authority on the president to restrict the entry of aliens abroad."

A federal appeals court in San Francisco, however, ruled that immigration statutes do not let a president exclude broad categories of people and moreover they explicitly bar him from discriminating based on nationality.

The case to be heard by the U.S. Supreme court is based on a lawsuit that was filed by Hawaii, some of its residents and Muslim group based there. The group argued that the travel ban has no precedent in the history of this country.

Opponents also say Trump's controversial ban discriminates against Muslims, thus violating the Constitution.
