Clipper Vacations is offering travelers a chance to learn about Seattle's "real locals" this summer.
Earlier this month, the San Juan Clipper kicked off its daily whale watching departures from Seattle's Pier 69, trips that are focused on the region's treasured orca whales.
In addition to orcas, the two-and-a-half-hour experience allows participants to observe humpback and minke whales as well as other sea life. Onboard naturalists narrate the trips, providing education and insights regarding whale conservation efforts.
A high-speed catamaran that travels at speeds of up to 25 knots, the San Juan Clipper offers three indoor and outdoor viewing decks to observe the marine animals.
"This year, we're extremely excited to see that our resident orca pods have returned with a much more consistent presence in the Salish Sea," said Justine Buckmaster, a veteran San Juan Clipper naturalist. "We've also experienced a resurgence of humpback activity in the Northwest meaning it should be a very active whale watching season."
After the whale watching excursion, the Clipper Vacation's experience includes a two-hour stop at picturesque San Juan Island to explore Friday Harbor. The stunning harbor town features a whale museum, a vast array of boutique shops and galleries as well as great waterfront restaurants.
The San Juan Clipper also offers a great alternative mode of direct transportation to Friday Harbor for those looking to skip driving or ferry lines wait in Anacortes. Passengers hoping to see more of the island can also book a Clipper hotel overnight package.
The daily whale watching departures will continue until September 9, after which they will be offered on weekends only through mid-October. Prices start at $99 for adults and $25 for children 11 and under when booked at least one day in advance.
