The Greek island of Crete truly feels like its own world, and with good reason. At more than 3,200 square miles, it is the largest island in all of Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. With Celestyal’s mid-size ships, cruisers can easily explore the ports that larger ships can’t access and get closer to dazzling destinations. Crete has plenty to see and do; you’ll visit vibrant towns where historic buildings rub shoulders with cosmopolitan cafés. There are plenty of myths and mysteries here—not to mention delicious coffee and pastries to enjoy after getting swept up in the island’s myriad stories.

Here are three reasons why Greece’s largest island is also one of its best!

1. Beautiful landscapes. Don’t be fooled by the industrial harbor. Crete has plenty of beauty spots to rival her postcard-ready sister islands. Coastal star Ammoudara Beach is perfect to enjoy a moment of serenity. The golden sands and azure Aegean will wash your cares away. Or head inland to experience the countryside, where you’ll journey into the mountains to Stironas, one of the island’s most traditional villages. Sample wine and raki fresh from the barrel, then clear your head with fresh mountain air as the sun sets.

2. Endless history. This island features history at every turn, from Heraklion’s Venetian fortress to Chania’s narrow streets. In the hotter months, you can pivot and visit the fascinating Historical Museum of Heraklion for your taste of history indoors. Crete has a deep-rooted history dating back thousands of years. Mythology enthusiasts will recognize it as the birthplace of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. The Minoan civilization flourished here almost 3000 years ago, and today, you’ll spot incredible relics from their time, such as the Palace of Knossos.

3. Rich flavors. The cuisine here promises not to disappoint your taste buds. Residents here still craft their menus from the fruits of the lands, as in historical times. Important ingredients here are fruits and vegetables ripened by the warm Mediterranean sun. Plus, you’ll enjoy the freshest fish that travels from the sparkling Aegean,  lean meat made delicious from rich mountain grass, and local olive oil, honey, and cheese—all washed down with locally produced wine and Cretan raki.
