Curious about a different way to see Mexico? The state of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico, offers the Chepe Express, a nine-hour train ride from Chihuahua to Creel in offering a panoramic route of the western Sierra Madre.
The Chepe Express route offers five destinations to visit across the nine-hour route, which can be taken in a single day to get from Los Mochis to Creel, or taken across several days. Travelers wanting to stop in each destination can enjoy a leisurely train tour across several days, spending a night in each stop along the route.
Bahuichivo
The first stop in Chihuahua: Bahuichivo. It is a train stop that connects travelers to the town of Cerocahui, home to picturesque vineyards and the Huicochi waterfall, both excellent options to enjoy.
Travelers can enjoy the natural beauty on a bird-watching tour or simply stroll through the city, which dates back to the late 17th century.
Divisadero
The next stop on the Chepe Express is Divisadero, located high in the Copper Canyon mountains. From the stop, travelers can view three different canyons at once: Urique, Tararecua and del Cobre.
Divisadero is one of the most developed stops for tourism, so there are three great hotels and a large selection of experiences to enjoy in the scenic area, from horseback riding to enjoying a leisurely cable car ride or even a high-intensity zipline through the mountains.
Stay for a night or two or three, then head back on the Chepe Express for the last stop.
Creel
Creel is the last stop on the Chepe Express (or the first, if you’d like to begin from here and end in Sinaloa, instead).
It’s home to several caves, scenic natural areas, a museum honoring the region’s local handicrafts and more. As a government-designated Magic Town, you’ll know the town has something special in store for visitors.
Travelers can also visit Lake Arareko, go rafting or take a boat down the El Fuerte river, go horseback riding, ATV-ing and more.
From Creel, you can head anywhere you like: head back to Sinaloa and its airport, or into the state’s eponymous capital city, which deserves several days’ exploration on its own.
