In a story that made the rounds a couple of weeks ago, an under-11 youth basketball team in Charlottesville, Va., was disqualified from a tournament championship game for having a girl on its roster.
Of course, the story involved the fact that 10-year-old Kymora Johnson played for the Charlottesville Cavaliers and was pretty good and parents of opposing teams - always the parents, right? - were pretty upset that she was on a boys squad.
When word got back to the New York Liberty, the women's professional basketball team in the WNBA, the club and Delta Air Lines - a Liberty sponsor - did something about it.
The Liberty and Delta flew the team, their coaches and parents up to New York this past weekend to watch the Liberty play Tulsa at Madison Square Garden. The Cavaliers even got to play in the world's most famous arena against a team from Madison Square Garden's "Basketball in the Boroughs and Beyond" program, a youth basketball initiative.
"The Liberty organization thought it would be great to do something special for the team," Kristin Bernert, senior vice president of business & basketball operations for the New York Liberty, told The Huffington Post. "Ultimately, the Liberty are striving to inspire young women to take their basketball experiences and build a foundation for successful, healthy adult lives."
