The World's Most Punctual Airlines This Fall

Air travel can present many challenges in 2023, one of the biggest which can be reaching your destination on time. With airlines facing pilot and staffing shortages amid soaring demand for travel, there's always the potential for your flight to be delayed even when weather isn't a factor. Nonetheless, some carriers are navigating the current climate better than others as evidenced by Cirium aviation analytics' monthly on-time performance report for September 2023.

Cirium defines on-time performance as an aircraft arrival at the gate under 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time. With that in mind, here's a look at the airlines around the world excelling in terms of punctuality this fall.

Colombia's flag carrier, Avianca continues to lead the way globally with an on-time percentage (OTP) of 89.88 percent in September 2023. That figure marks an almost three-point improvement from the previous month.

In the Middle East, Qatar Airways also held onto its position at number two globally with an impressive OTP of 87.84 percent. Only Oman Air, Safair and Royal Jordanian Airlines fared better in the Middle East and Africa region.

The most punctual U.S. carrier this fall, Delta Air Lines checked in at third place in the global rankings with an OTP of 86.40 percent, signaling an improvement of almost four points over the previous month and nearly eight points from July 2023. Alaska Airlines (83.81 percent), United Airlines (82.54 percent) and American Airlines (82.28 percent) are also among the most reliable in terms of North American carriers. 

Brazil's Azul Airlines ranks fourth globally this fall with an OTP of 85.71 percent. That follows an OTP of 85.37 percent in August 2023 and an OTP of 86.48 percent in July 2023. It's safe to say that the South American carrier is easily one of the world's most consistent at this point.

Saudia Arabia's flag carrier Saudia came in fifth in the global rankings for September 2023 with an OTP of 84.99 percent, a near five-point improvement from its mark in August 2023.
