Delta Air Lines has changed its uniform policy for crew
members after a social media controversy.
An outraged passenger photographed two flight attendants
wearing pins that supported Palestine. The incident caused a stir and debate on
social media, forcing
Delta to take action.
The photograph and subsequent post was put on social
media on July 10, meaning Delta reacted quickly and changed its policy. Delta
has enacted a rule that goes into effect on Monday that bans employees from
wearing any pin that supports a country or nationality other than the United
States.
“We
are proud of our diverse base of employees and customers and the foundation of
our brand, which is to connect the world and provide a premium experience,” the
Atlanta-based airline said in a statement. “We are taking this step to help
ensure a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for all.”
In
other words, the airline doesn’t want to be caught taking sides and causing a
problem.
The
nearly 10-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has brought up bitter feelings
about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The flight attendants who wore
the pins were not in violation of Delta’s previous policy, but the carrier
decided to err on the side of caution by changing its policy. A third Delta
flight attendant voiced concern on social media in a post that has since been
deleted.
Delta
posted its own reply that also included an apology.
