Japan Airlines (JAL) will be adding 42 new aircraft as part of its fleet renewal plan, increasing the number of aircraft for both domestic and international routes.
JAL will add 21 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, 11 A321neo and 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Twenty Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be added to bolster its international routes, along with 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft. JAL expects flight growth to North America, India and other parts of Asia in the years to come. The new aircraft will be introduced over a six-year period, beginning in 2027.
The airline will also add 21 Boeing 737-8 aircraft to replace its domestic fleet, which is currently comprised of Boeing 737-800s. The transition will begin in 2026. The 11 A321neo aircraft will replace JAL’s existing fleet of medium-sized Boeing 767 aircraft. These planes will fly high-demand routes beginning in 2028 from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Japan Airlines is working to invest in better fuel efficiency to reduce emissions. It has a 10 percent emissions reduction goal by 2030 and a near-zero emissions target for 2050. The A321neo, for example, reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by around 15 percent, compared to its previous model.
JAL is currently in its third fiscal year in its JAL Group Medium-Term Management Plan for FY 2021-2025. It created the Rolling Plan 2024 to tackle this year’s challenges, which include global instability and rising prices. It predicts EBIT for the fiscal year of 2024 to be 170 billion yen, approximately US$1.124 billion.
The airline recently made history when it named Mitsuko Tottori the airline’s first woman president. Tottori started working for JAL as a flight attendant, and is the first woman executive with the airline to start out as a flight attendant. She assumes her new role in April.
