United Airlines is the latest carrier to pass down rising oil costs to its customers by raising checked baggage fees.
The Chicago-based airline confirmed that it will hike those inconvenient fees by $10, effective immediately.
"United is raising first and second checked bag fees by $10 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico and Canada and Latin America beginning with tickets purchased Friday, April 3," United said in a statement to USA Today.
The changes come on the heels of a similar announcement made by JetBlue this week as carriers are faced with higher operating costs amid the current state of global economic uncertainty, due in large part to the ongoing Iran war.
United customers prepaying for bags before check-in will pay $45 for the first bag, up from $35. A second bag will cost $55 instead of $45, and a third jumps from $150 to $200.
Passengers purchasing checked bags within 24 hours of their flight will pay $50 for the first item, up from $40, and $60 for the second bag, up from $50.
As is the case with JetBlue, United credit card holders, qualifying loyalty program members and other eligible travelers will maintain access to free checked bags.
This marks the first time in two years that United has increased checked baggage fees.
