WHY IT RATES: Airfare is by far one of the costliest components to travel and now, children can fly for free, saving parents money on flights to Europe from several U.S. hubs. -Janeen Christoff, TravelPulse Senior Writer

From Tuesday, May 1, 2018, through Sunday, May 13, 2018, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will offer free base airfare for children ages 2 to 11 years old as well as infants up to 24 months traveling with an adult.

For the cost of applicable taxes and fees, kids will be able to travel in SAS Go and SAS Plus classes from the airline's seven U.S. gateways-in Boston (BOS), New York (EWR), Miami (MIA), Washington D.C. (IAD), Chicago (ORD), San Francisco (SFO), and Los Angeles (LAX)-to the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.

Travel dates are from Monday, August 20, 2018, through Saturday, March 30, 2019. Travel must be completed by Sunday, March 31, 2019. Blackout dates include Thursday, December 20, 2018, through Tuesday, January 8, 2019.

While on the ground, see the world through the eyes of a small traveler by visiting Scandinavia and Finland's abundance of attractions and museums with activities and special exhibits for kids.

In advance of the "Frozen" Flurry of 2019-"Frozen 2" is set for release on November 27, 2019-fans of the film can visit Princess Elsa and Princess Anna's homeland of Norway.

In Olso, kids can play in green parklands, take a day trip to TusenFryd Amusement Park (approximately 12 miles outside the city), or learn about Scandinavia's Viking roots at local museums.

Adventure lovers can take off to the Fjords for boat trips and water-based activities, or the Nordland and Far North for dog-sledding and wildlife watching to catch a glimpse of whales, musk-oxen, elks, walruses, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and more.

In Copenhagen, children can play their way through history at the Children's Museum at the National Museum, go on an adventure through the Tivoli Gardens or Copenhagen Zoo, as well as visit LEGO Land and the LEGO House.
Young gamers and scientific minds will enjoy the Spelmuseum (Museum of Video Games), National Museum of Science and Technology, and Swedish Museum of Natural History and Cosmonova in Stockholm.

Whereas those looking for some magic can venture to the fairytale world of Junibacke or the oldest museum in Sweden, Livrustkammaren (the Royal Armoury Museum), for princess and knight dress-up.

Keeping the fairytale vacation alive, in Finland families can stay at the 'fairytale castle' of Imatran Valtionhotelli or visit castles and fortresses across the country like the impressive island castle of Savolinna-home to a 15th-century, three-tower castle named Olavinlinna (St. Olaf's Castle) as well as water activities.

During the holiday season, Lapland-Finland's northernmost region-is a winter wonderland with Santa, elves reindeer and more.
