Amtrak is reaching out to the community.
Under its new program, the California Everyday Discounts program, the rail company will offer seniors, students and passengers with disabilities year-round savings on train travel along the Pacific Surfliner route. The program was developed in conjunction with the state's two other intercity rail services.
The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service connects nearly three million passengers a year to the top Southern California destinations, including San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
"We are committed to enhancing the connectivity of the communities we serve and are excited to launch the California Everyday Discounts program to help make passenger rail service as accessible as possible," service chairman Bryan MacDonald said in a statement. "While it's important for us to increase ridership and improve farebox cost recovery for our service, we are proud to be able to maintain the best possible fares for our passengers who have come to rely on these discounts."
Amtrak provided details of the discount program for travelers who book their journey online, by phone and at staffed Amtrak stations:
-Seniors Save 15 Percent: Travelers ages 62 and older receive a 15 percent discount on the regular adult fare with promo code V282.
-Passengers with Disabilities save 15 Percent: Adult passengers with a disability receive a 15 percent discount on the regular adult fare with promo code V577.
-Students Save 15 Percent: Students ages 13-25 with a valid student ID are eligible for 15 percent off the regular adult fare with promo code V353.
-Kids Ride 50 Percent Off: One child (ages 2-12) ride half-price with a paid adult. Ages 2 and younger ride free. No promo code is needed.
