American Cruise Lines will add five new ships to its fleet over the next two years, the company announced this week.
The ships will be constructed in Salisbury, Maryland, by Chesapeake Shipbuilding. They include a mix of American Riverboats and Coastal Cats which, once competed, will sail in the United States.
The new vessels will increase the cruise line’s capacity on the Mississippi and Columbia rivers, as well as its coastal offerings.
“The new contract is an exciting expansion of the American Cruise Lines fleet,” said Charles B. Robertson, American Cruise Lines’ president and chief executive officer, in a statement. “After several years building the coastal fleet, we are once again ready to begin building out the U.S. river cruise capacity.”
This year, the cruise line debuted three new ships: a river vessel called American Serenade, plus two Coastal Cats called American Eagle and American Glory. The company expects to launch two additional ships, American Legend and American Liberty, next year.
In 2024, the company expects to be sailing 19 total ships on itineraries that visit more than 35 states. Its vessels can accommodate between 90 and 180 passengers each.
