The Italian line Costa Cruises is making healthy dining fun for its youngest guests.
The line has revamped its menus and incorporated an educational card game into the mix.
The new menus are influenced by the principles of a Mediterranean diet, while the card game aims to teach young cruisers about proper nutrition and the value of making the right food choices.
Pasta, fruits and vegetables are the main components of the new menu. Children have seven menu options available daily. Each is identified by a special name: Red Planet, Yellow Planet, White Planet, Purple Planet, Green Planet, Hidden Treasure and Rainbow.
Selections include Barilla mini-penne with cream, peas and ham; crescenza cheese with battered slices of carrot; legumotti in tomato sauce with tuna, olives and mozzarella cheese; 5-grain fusilli pasta with vegetable carbonara are just a few of the delights offered.
Along with their menu choice, the children will receive a package of ten playing cards. Illustrated by famous Italian cartoonist, the cards contain characters representing fruit and vegetable colors. Kids can collect and exchange all the cards (a total of 85) with each other.
Part of the giant Carnival Corporation & plc., Costa's newest ship, Costa Venezia, joins the fleet in spring 2019. It is the first Costa ship to be designed and built specifically for the Chinese market. Two additional vessels will debut in the fall of 2019 and 2021. They'll be fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), touted as the world's "cleanest fossil fuel."
