When it comes to celebrating the milestone 250th anniversary of the United States of America, there’s no shortage of celebrations, events, festivals and experiences to enjoy all across the country.
But if you’re just getting started researching ways you can celebrate, or considering planning a trip this year with the nation’s milestone in mind, the experiences below might serve as a jumping-off point for you to begin your search.
The Thirteen Colonies

The original thirteen colonies that eventually became the United States are offering some amazing America 250 experiences, closely connected to the history that played out across the region during the Revolutionary War era. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it does show just how rich the region is in its experiences.
Loudoun County, Virginia, located just outside Washington, D.C., offers connections to American history, from the Revolution to the Civil War. Travelers can enjoy a discounted Loudoun Heritage Pass, which provides entry to six local museums and attractions, including sites dating back to 1700, to experience part of this history for themselves.
Baltimore, Maryland, is participating in Sail250, a gathering of military and tall ships from around the world to celebrate America 250. The event in Maryland spans from June 25th to July 1st, offering Blue Angels aerial performances, free waterfront festivals and incredible ships.
Historic Williamsburg, Virginia, is known for its living history museum and is one of the best places to learn about colonial history. This year, it’s debuting The Great American Birthday Quilt, a nationwide art project combining homemade quilt blocks submitted by Americans across the nation. The 500-foot-long quilt is now available to view at the Historic Triangle, along with all the other immersive history experiences travelers can enjoy there.
The Olde English District of South Carolina is offering several celebrations. The region’s Revolutionary War Visitor Center is hosting a luncheon learning series and lectures on the role of African Americans during the Revolutionary War. Anniversary Guided Hikes at Blackstock’s take place on November 20th, remembering the Battle of Blackstock’s. Meanwhile, the various counties within the district all offer something special, from genealogical workshops to community events, walking tours and more.
Delaware County in New York is home to both historical and agricultural bounty, with farm stays, farmer’s markets, U-pick experiences and plenty of celebrations to commemorate America 250. There’ll be Revolutionary-era candle-making classes, living history events, a historic driving tour and a Water Festival at the Pepacton Paddle Park, where there’ll be a history lecture, live music, a reenactment village and more.
Richmond, Virginia and the surrounding regions offer a whole slate of “Always Revolutionary” experiences, from Richmond Sailfest to Liberty or Death Reenactments at the Historic St. John’s Church. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture’s new We the People exhibit traces the history of American immigration over the centuries. Later this fall, Scotchtown will celebrate Virginia’s first governor, the famed orator of “Give me liberty or give me death,” Patrick Henry.
Alexandria, Virginia, is celebrating its 276th anniversary this year, taking part in the Virginia 250 Passport program and hosting fun events like Sail Virginia 2026, the 47th annual Alexandria Jazz Fest, a special exhibit at the Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum, a city-wide public art project, a special anniversary festival on July 11th and special events at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
Those heading to New York City won’t be left out of the celebrations. New York’s famous ball drop will return to Times Square on July 3rd, dropping eight times, once for every time zone in America, creating a nearly 24-hour event. It’ll be broadcast live, but visitors will enjoy a live celebration, followed by America’s Block Party on July 4th as well as a charity benefit. On July 5th, travelers can read the Declaration of Independence on the Times Square Skywalk and write a message of giving and reflection on a piece of confetti that will be released during this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
New Jersey is hosting plenty of exciting events and celebrations for residents and travelers alike, including Sail4th 250, a major International Parade of Sail complete with a fireworks display over the Hudson River; free performances by the Ocean City Orchestra on July 2nd and July 4th; a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at Morristown National Historical Park; historic Tavern Talks across the state; two major Revolutionary War reenactments and much more.

Chicago is offering Chicago 250, a full slate of celebrations with exhibits, performances, parties and public art that put a Midwestern spin on the milestone year. Festivals from the Chicago Air and Water Show to the city’s historic sites are all offering something special.
One special program is the Chicago Public Library system’s “Letters to America” project, where visitors and residents alike can write a letter of personal reflection that will be preserved for generations as part of the city’s historical archive.

There are plenty of experiences for those heading to Tennessee this year. Nashville’s hosting a two-day live music festival for Independence Day, called the Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th. The event is free and will conclude with a fireworks show combined with a Nashville Symphony performance.

To celebrate its connection to American history, it launched the Big Boy 4014, the world’s largest operational steam engine locomotive and a part of Union Pacific’s train fleet. Big Boy departs Cheyenne and heads from Wyoming to Salt Lake City and California before visiting other destinations across the country, from New York to Chicago.
Travelers to Cheyenne can also enjoy its Depot Days, a multi-day event offering access to the Union Pacific Machine Shop and Round House, as well as the Cheyenne Depot Museum.
Central Oregon’s High Desert Museum is offering a new year-long series, 250 in the West. The program explores American identity and themes, from public lands to citizenship, offering an engaging and community-centric learning opportunity for visitors and residents alike.

While most of the America 250 celebrations will occur within the United States, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other places around the world taking part. The small Caribbean island of Nevis and the country of Denmark are each offering special celebrations.
Nevis is the birthplace of founding father, Alexander Hamilton. This year, the Nevis Performing Arts Centre is hosting The Trial of Hamilton and Nelson, a courtroom-style theatrical event where audiences can discover Hamilton’s legacy in action. Travelers can also experience the island from Hamilton’s day with the Alexander Hamilton Island Tour.
Did you know the largest Independence Day celebration held outside the United States takes place each year in a Danish national park? Rebild National Park in Jutland, Denmark, has celebrated our Independence Day since 1912 with its Rebildfestival, a celebration marking the relationship between the U.S. and Denmark.
The park itself was purchased by a group of Danish Americans in 1911 and given to Denmark as a permanent memorial to Danish American identity. Since 1912, the park has hosted Independence Day celebrations attended by prominent Americans, including George H.W. Bush, Richard Nixon and Walt Disney.
