The Mexican Caribbean is celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the heart of New York City this year with a unique pop-up event in Times Square, complete with a colorful Cancún sign, a live mariachi band, Mexican food and more.
Travelers and residents heading through Times Square can visit the Cinco de Mayo celebrations from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. local time at Father Duffy Square, the corner of Times Square along 7th Ave. and 47th St.
Dignitaries from Mexico will also be present, including Bernardo Cueto Riestra, the Secretary of Tourism for Quintana Roo, and Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña, who is the Municipal President of the Benito Juárez City Council.
The installation will remain available in Times Square for a limited time. The event and installation were created in collaboration with the Municipal Government of Cancún, Quintana Roo State Tourism, the Mexican Consulate in New York and Cancún’s Consular Liaison Office.
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the win of a historical battle against the French in the mid-1800s. It is now celebrated in Mexico and in the United States as a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.
