Don’t drink the water!
How many times have you heard that warning when traveling
to Mexico?
Well, now the old stereotype appears to be true.
The United States is warning visitors
not to drink the tap water in Cancun, one of the most popular vacation
destinations in the world. The warning to American tourists came from the State
Department.
Visitors to Mexico know to air on the side of caution to
avoid tap water and to drink bottled water instead. That includes such mundane
things as brushing your teeth, as just one drink from the tap water could lead
to parasites and bacteria and other issues.
The associated sickness has long been jokingly referred
to as Montezuma's Revenge, but it's no joke. The complications, even in their
mildest form, can ruin a vacation.
Bottled water is recommended, whether in your hotel room
or a public restaurant, and that includes skipping the ice in beverages because
it could cause complications when it melts.
This is just a friendly warning. Mexican officials have
urged that the problem has not risen to epidemic levels. Instead, it is just a
precaution so that you don't spend most of your vacation in the same room with
the porcelain god.
Visitors are advised to purchase travel insurance,
especially if your trip results in a hospital visit.
Tips include buying plenty of bottled water, not swallowing
the water when taking a shower, and asking that fruit and vegetables be cleaned
and washed in purified water.
