Global market research company Euromonitor International has released its annual rankings of city destinations based on tourism, sustainability and economic performance.
Europe dominates the field.
Paris was crowned the most attractive city destination in the world in the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023, with seven European destinations landing in the top 10 and the continent owning 63 spots in the top 100 overall.
Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager (Loyalty) at Euromonitor International, said: “Paris has retained the title of the world's leading city following exceptional performance across the Tourism Policy and Attractiveness, Tourism Infrastructure and Tourism Performance pillars.”
Paris was followed by Dubai in second place, Madrid in third, Tokyo in fourth and Amsterdam in fifth. The top 10 was rounded out by Berlin (6), Rome (7), New York (8), Barcleona (9) and London (10).

For the first time in the report's history, Tokyo has entered the top 10 due to improved developments in tourism infrastructure, the easing of travel restrictions and the relatively weak value of the Yen.
Asia was also well represented at the top of the rankings, with Singapore (11), Seoul (14), Osaka (16), and Hong Kong (17) all making the top 20.

The report comes amid the continuing recovery in international travel in 2023. Euromonitor International noted that 2023 should see a 38% increase in the total number of international trips, a total expected to reach 1.3 billion by the end of the year and one that reflects the long-awaited return of Chinese travelers.
Issued by Euromonitor International in partnership with data company Lighthouse, the report used over 50 metrics across six pillars to give cities an overall attractiveness score. The six pillars are: economic and tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, business performance, health and safety, and sustainability.
