Tourists visiting Isla Mujeres in the new year should plan to bring along some extra pesos, as the island is set to be the first port of Quintana Roo to collect a new tax from tourists starting January 1st.

"It is similar to lodging, but this fee is for those who arrive at the docks of Isla Mujeres," Government Secretary General Francisco Xavier Lopez Mena told Riviera Maya News. "They will begin charging on the first day of the new year since it has just been approved."

The exact fee is not currently known, but it will be different from the Lodging Tax which costs twenty pesos per night.

The money will be collected at the port of Isla Mujeres from tourists, and the funds will go toward the maintenance of public services.

Mena said, "The first precedent has already been set and that it will probably be replicated by Holbox and Cozumel soon after."

Cozumel and Holbox could possibly "join the initiative during the first quarter of next year," according to Mena.

He added, "It was approved by the state Congress, but it must be made very clear that it will be for the tourists not for the residents. Those who show they are Quintana Roo residents will be exempt from payment."
