If you're planning to visit Sri Lanka this year, you'll enjoy this next bit of good news: the country is rolling out free visas for more than 30 countries.
Starting on May 1, 2019, citizens from more than 30 countries will receive a free visa on arrival, including U.S. citizens.
That's a $20-$40 savings to visit the island. Sri Lanka's neighbor, India, charges between $80-$100 for a visa. This new move could persuade visitors to choose the island country over India in a move to save money.
Tourists from the U.S., U.K., E.U., Canda, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea are among the countries who qualify for this new roll out.
The free visa will run for six months and could possibly become permanent if it boosts tourism to the island.
The Sri Lankan government hopes to double the 2.1 million visitors it had in 2017 by 2020. With free visas to over 30 countries, they're off to a good start.
