Tobago’s Comfort Inn and Suites became the Caribbean island’s
latest hotel to achieve Green Key certification, according to the Tobago
Tourism Agency Ltd (TTAL).
The property joins seven other Tobago properties that have earned the designation, which recognizes
excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainability within the
tourism industry.
Green Key is a voluntary global eco-certification program
under which operators are required to maintain strict environmental practices. The
certification process evaluates aspects of an establishment's operations,
including environmental management, energy conservation, waste management,
water conservation and other sustainable practices.
More than 4,400 hotels and establishments across more than
60 countries worldwide have been Green Key certified.
The Comfort Inn and Suites’ operation reflects “the growing
emphasis on eco-friendly initiatives in the tourism sector, reflecting a
positive shift towards responsible travel practices,” said Willard Harris, director
of Green T&T, which administers the program in Tobago in partnership with TTAL.
Other Tobago hotels to have achieved Green Key designation include
Castara Retreats, Hibiscus Heights, Adventure Eco Villas, Bananaquit Vacations,
House of Grace, Tropical Apartments and Shepherds Inn.
Green T&T supports
TTAL’s “commitment to promoting responsible tourism practices in Tobago” via initiatives
focused on recycling, energy conservation and purchasing from local farmers. “It
speaks to a mindset and behavioral changes among guests, staff, and suppliers,”
said Wendell Walker, TTAL’s director of product development.
