I once allowed my nephew to help me make breakfast, leading to some highly unsanitary dough balls that were supposed to be pancakes, so excuse my trepidation over Kinderkookkafe, the Amsterdam restaurant where kids make and serve the food.
Amusing Planet (h/t The Huffington Post) reports on a restaurant that nurtures the kid within all of us with, well, nourishment from child chefs.
The report states, "Kinderkookkafé is a family restaurant in Amsterdam that is run entirely by children: they cook, serve, bring the bill and wash up, all with a little help from the friendly grown-up staff, of course."
Blast those darn child labor laws, or else we would finally have a solution to third graders learning math while tending the drive-thru window.
All joking aside, it seems the restaurant, whose namesake means Kid's Kitchen Café, is dedicated to teaching some entirely valuable lessons.
According to the report, Kinderkookkafe is a day care that also serves as a cooking school. And forget the notion that kids are slaving away over a hot stove, pushing out a rack of lamb to table 20 and some pork chops to the four-top that just sauntered in without a reservation.
No, things are far more relaxed, and kids have the option to do whatever they like in this restaurant biz that affords them the opportunity to play chef for Sunday tea if the idea strikes them.
Kids are allowed to do everything from cooking the meals to maintaining the menu, choosing what task, if any, they want to accomplish.
For a modest price you can support a café and day care that has been around since 1981 and recently moved to a new location in Vondelpark, according to the café's website.
The website maintains kids from seven on up are allowed to cook. As for cost, you are looking at, "€12.50 per child and €12.50 per guest."
But really, what's money when it's served next to a child's smile?
