Erik Weihenmayer is a blind man enjoying a daunting task: kayaking down the Grand Canyon's expansive and treacherous Colorado River.
The Los Angeles Times' Mary Forgione reports the 45-year-old embarked on a 21-day journey throughout the famed canyons, which is no short of extraordinary as he leans heavily on feel and guides leading the way.
Thankfully, the New York Times caught up with Weihenmayer in 2012, explaining how he manages to kayak treacherous rivers, which will help him get through a reportedly 21-day, 277-mile journey:
Nature Valley shows off Weihenmayer training along the river, using a trailing guide, technologically advanced headphones, his own flash sonar and an undaunted human spirit.
Forgione explains it's all part of Nature Valley's "No Barriers Grand Canyon Expedition." The initiative's page explains:
"On September 7, Erik, along with fellow blind adventurer Lonnie Bedwell, will begin a whitewater kayaking expedition that will take them down 277 miles of the often fiery Colorado River. Together, they will be the first blind team to kayak through the Grand Canyon - a feat that rivals the technical challenges of climbing Mount Everest.
Along the way, Erik and Lonnie hope to encourage one million people to sign the No Barriers Pledge and make this the year that they overcome whatever is standing in their way, no matter how big or small."
Weihenmayer's official website touts a man who has a thing for conquering the unbelievable. Blinded at 13 by retinoschesis, the 45-year-old has accomplished more than most do their entire lives, with or without sight.
According to his website, he has climbed Mount Everest as well as the Seven Summits, and he is also the author of two works including his memoir, Touch the Top of the World: A Blind Man's Journey to Climb Farther Than the Eye can See.
Starting Sept. 7, Weihenmayer pushed off into serene waters, welcoming the promise of treacherous obstacles and untold challenges, much as he has his entire life.
