The Red Car Trolleys that Disney California Adventure visitors have grown accustomed to seeing trundling up and down Hollywood Boulevard will soon be a thing of the past.
The 12-year-old attraction is set to be phased out in 2025, according to theme park journalist Scott Gustin who posted about the upcoming change on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
"Avengers Campus construction at DCA, set to begin in early 2025, will require the removal of the backstage Red Car Trolley barn and will result in Disney discontinuing operation of the attraction in early 2025, Disneyland officials said. A specific date will be shared later," Gustin said on the social media platform.
The trolleys debuted in 2012 during a renovation of Disney California Adventure. SF Gate reported, however, that visitors were not fans of the California tourism theme that emerged as part of those renovations and felt they would be better off visiting the real California historical sites that were portrayed in the theme park.
The revamp created an area that was meant to look like the 1920s when Walt Disney first arrived in California. The trolley ride was created to look like the Pacific Electric Railway, which was part of Southern California in the early 1900s.
The trolleys included a replication of the sound of the original horns and overhead trolley cables lined Disney California Streets to give the ride an even more authentic feel, according to SF Gate.
The Red Car Trolleys will remain in place until early 2025, at which point they will be eliminated. In addition, the car barn where the trolleys are serviced will be eliminated to accommodate the expanding Avengers campus.
The original Avengers areas at Disney California Adventure opened in 2021. The initial offerings on the Avengers campus allow guests to team up with their favorite superheroes in a fully immersive
experience.
The campus features rides such as the WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man
Adventure, housed in the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, also known as
WEB where innovations come to life.
Disney did not respond to SF Gate's requests for comment about the elimination of the Red Car Trolleys.
