Scaling Mt. Everest takes an immense amount of mountaineering acumen, courage and luck. Watching the movie based on one such expedition just takes a seat, of which you will only need the edge.

Universal Pictures recently released the trailer for "Everest," a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington and Keira Knightley-whose role mandates her to be on the phone the entire time it seems.

Now it's far too early to speculate on whether the movie-based on Jon Krakauer's exhilarating account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, "Into Thin Air"-will captivate audiences to the tune of grand box office returns.

But we can safely say the trailer is promising, showing the agonizing and grueling process that is conquering one of the most revered landmarks on the face of the planet.

The movie is set for release on Sept. 18 and recounts the tragedy that occurred during May of 1996 when eight people lost their lives.

Wikipedia puts that particular disaster into perspective with more recent events that tragically claimed the lives of those trying to summit the mountain.

Its entry reads: "In the entire season (Spring, 1996), 12 people died trying to reach the summit, making this the deadliest day and the deadliest year on Mount Everest until the 16 fatalities of the 2014 Mount Everest avalanche and the 18 deaths resulting from avalanches caused by the 2015 Nepal earthquake."

Dr. Ken Kamler, who was close to climbers caught in the devastating storm that May, recounts his thoughts and experiences of the event at a 2009 talk:

Now this isn't the only film to feature the mountain that calls and claims so many climbers over the decades.

We previously reported that Michael Sheen would star in an upcoming movie based on a far earlier expedition.

"In High Places" will center on the ill-fated journey of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine in 1924.

Both movies aim to encapsulate the harrowing expeditions of climbers that couldn't resist the temptation of Everest.

That allure has led to great triumphs and, sadly, great misfortune. But it stands as a beacon on top of the world, calling any would-be climbers with its intoxicating allure.

From the looks of it, "Everest" is a movie that offers a vantage most of us will never get to experience.
