How to Know if an Adult Trip is Right for You
Features & Advice Lisa Iannucci September 18, 2017

Looking for a little more spice in your relationship or want a different kind of adventure on your trip?
You might be interested in traveling to a more risqué resort – read ‘clothing optional.'
However, it first might be best to determine what your definition of risqué is.
“I am a believer that risqué is subjective,” said Tracy K Drechsler, owner of Your Dream Travel Concierge. “Amsterdam is risqué to some, Las Vegas is risqué to others.”
During Drechsler’s recent stay at Breathless Resort in Punta Cana, she was browsing the gift shop and noticed an area draped with beads, so she was curious and looked inside.
“To my surprise and amusement, they had a variety of sex toys, condoms and lubricants for sale,” she said. “Many would find that risqué.”
Once you determine your level of boundary-pushing, it’s important to understand the difference between nudist and naturist.
“There are numerous nude or naturist locations around the world,” said John F. Krieger, president of Trail Sweepers in Kingston, New York. “The naturists are true nudists, to be differentiated from recreational nudism as you find in Mexico and Jamaica where most are clothing optional.”
Krieger said that Mexico’s Desire and Desire Pearl resorts on the Riviera Maya cater to recreational nudists and swingers.
“Hidden Beach Resort on the Riviera Maya caters primarily to naturists,” he added.
"If you are a couple looking for a more risqué destination, Hedonism in Jamaica fits the bill,” said Kim DalPonte, owner of Pixie Dust & Paradise Travel, Inc. “Breathless in Punta Cana is definitely more risqué than the Breathless in Riviera Cancun, which only has a topless area. Club Med in Punta Cana is also topless, which is something you will find often in resorts that have a European flair.

Hedonism II—or Hedo as it is commonly referred—caters to couples and singles and is a clothing optional property.
“So if you are single and want to be naked, Hedo is your go-to resort,” said Drechsler. “In addition to being clothing optional, Hedo also has a nude side of the property. While you may be naked on the clothing optional side, you must be nude on the nude side.”
She explained that Hedonism is also unique in that they offer day, night and day/night bundle passes.
“Hedonism also has a playroom for guests to explore their erotic side, either as participants or observers,” said Drechsler. “The playroom is for guests staying on the property only. Visitors/pass holders are not allowed entry. At Hedonism, you will likely find clients going back the same time every year, perhaps for a certain event, or to reconnect with friends they have made on a previous visit.”
Drechsler also explained that Temptation Cancun Resort went through a major renovation and just reopened in August: “While Temptations is topless optional, there is no nude area. This resort caters to couples and singles alike who are over 21 and has a very loyal clientele. Many guests become friends, stay in touch and return the same week, year after year.”
Drechsler explained that all lifestyle options have similar rules.
“Clothing is required in all restaurants and public areas. Photography is only allowed in designated areas. Public displays of affection are prohibited aside from playrooms, and playrooms are considered private areas. There are 'no drug' policies in place and, most importantly, no means no.”

Drechsler also recognized that not every travel agent is comfortable with requests for lifestyle clientele.
“I see the sneers, smirks, whispers and glances exchanged among fellow travel agents towards me because I do book these types of trips, but who am I to judge?” she said. “I am not suggesting any travel professional should sell any product or destination they aren't comfortable with, but I hope, in time, more will be open to it. Lifestyle clients are extremely discreet, non-judgmental and super loyal.
She explained that the repeaters are a mix of doctors, lawyers and accountants as well blue collar workers. The one-timers who go are typically enjoying a bachelor/bachelorette party, milestone birthday celebrations with friends, or just curious to see what it is all about.
