WHY IT RATES: Travel agents booking vacations for environmentally conscious clients should consider a stay at the EarthCheck-certified Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort.-Donald Wood, Breaking News Senior Writer.
Bahia Riviera Maya Resort, owned and operated by Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts - the leader in all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, has renewed its Silver EarthCheck Certification awarded by the world's leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.
The four hotels that encompass the brand's Mexico complex - Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal, Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an, Grand Bahia Principe Coba and Grand Bahia Principe Tulum - have achieved renewed Silver status, accolades that were initially awarded to all four properties in previous years.
The EarthCheck Certification adds to a lengthy list of sustainability awards that have been presented to the Bahia Principe brand, including 11 Travelife Gold Certifications, which were renewed in October 2017. In total, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts boasts 15 sustainability certifications distributed among its Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica properties.
"Renovating our EarthCheck Certification at our Riviera Maya complex highlights our commitment and efforts towards being industry leaders in sustainability at both the corporate level and on-site at Bahia Principe properties," said Antonia del Toro, CSR director for Grupo Piñero - Bahia Principe's parent company. "These distinctions prove that we are fulfilling our goal of positively contributing to the economic, social and environmental components of the destinations in which we operate. We are proud of these achievements and plan to enhance our efforts as we strive to be more environmentally sound."
In order to receive an EarthCheck Certification, hotels and resorts must complete a rigorous evaluation process led by EarthCheck auditors. The property must strictly comply with pre-established sustainability management criteria and showcase improvement when compared to previous audits. EarthCheck evaluates a number of key performance areas such as energy consumption, waste savings and recycling, greenhouse gas emissions and general CSR initiatives impacting the local community.
