The hospitality industry's effort to be environmentally conscious is taking on all forms from eliminating single-use plastics to an increased focus on serious recycling programs and even solar energy generation.

The latest development on the environmental front comes from Club Med. As part of its continued commitment to finding sustainable approaches to tourism, the company has just announced that it will begin introducing new uniforms for its staff made entirely from recycled plastics.

The special collection of uniforms will include polos, dresses, and caps and will be used for workers filling a variety of roles, the company said.

By opting for such uniforms, Club Med is not only finding a better use for plastic waste it is also reducing energy usage. That's because recycled plastic uniforms require 40 percent less energy consumption when compared to regular polyester production.

As an added bonus, in order to create Club Med's new uniforms, the equivalent of more than 200,000 plastic bottles have already been recycled.

The collection of attire is slated to debut in 2020. The project is being deployed across all nine of Club Med's North American/Caribbean resorts.

Employees in various departments including reception, guest relations, office administration, and management will don the new uniforms.

"The decision to create new staff uniforms made out of recycled plastic is one of the many initiatives that Club Med is enacting to continue to grow its sustainability efforts," the company said. "Throughout its history, Club Med has been dedicated to creating happy memories for guests from all over the world, but not at the expense of others or the environment."

Recently, the company shared news of its new eco-chic resort concept in the Dominican Republic (Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda), the removal of plastic straws from its resorts, and its "Bye-Bye Plastic" project to eliminate single-use plastics from its resorts globally.

Approximately 75 percent of the company's resorts are certified under Green Globe for maintaining high standards for sustainable tourism. Club Med's goal is to increase that number to 100 percent.

Club Med also makes a point of implementing an eco-friendly approach to the construction of its resorts.

For travelers who want to get in on the environmental stewardship, clothing made out of recycled plastic will also be available at select Club Med boutiques for guests to purchase.
