Hotels in Dubai will soon be more sustainable now that Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) are requiring all of the properties to comply with new requirements.
Dubai hotels will have 18 months to make 19 sustainability changes that are part of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative.

The 19 requirements weren't disclosed but in a statement they said the requirements fall under "sustainable management approaches, performance metrics, energy, food and water management plans, guest education, employee training initiatives, the presence of sustainability committees within hotel establishments and corporate social responsibility programmes for local communities."
The DST initiative aims to advance sustainability in the hotel industry. About 45 percent of Dubai's hotel industry has been trained to implement the sustainability requirements.
"The regulated guidelines will help promote energy conservation and efficiency, as well as encourage environmentally sustainable practices across the local tourism inventory," said Yousuf Lootah, executive director at DTCM.
