First opened in 1931, The Hotel Edison has seen a lot of history-starting when its namesake Thomas Edison turned on the property's lights at the grand opening.

Over the decades since, the hotel and its restaurants have even played starring roles in The Godfather, Bullets over Broadway and Birdman.

Today, as a member of the Triumph Hotels brand, the 810-room New York City property is finishing up some major renovations, which have left it as an excellent option for both business and leisure travelers.

Edison is located almost on top of Times Square, between 46th and 47th Streets, and between Broadway and 8th Ave. The location is incredibly convenient for seeing a Broadway show, but walking westward out of the hotel's front entrance on 47th Street will also keep you from the hordes of tourists if you wish to stay away from the craziness.

The hotel's interior is done in a beautiful art deco motif, and the lobby is framed by murals in the same style. Twice-weekly complimentary manager's receptions (Tuesday and Friday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m.) almost overflow the lobby's common space, but plans are already in place to move the front desk and open up more square footage with the brand new 46th Street entrance.

The Edison is the exception in the Triumph brand-the other six hotels, all in New York, are small, boutique properties. Yet, the Edison never felt like an 800-room property.

The very friendly staff remembered our names throughout our visit, and we never waited in long lines.

Three adjacent restaurants are all fun choices:

-The Rum Bar feels like it's from a bygone era, and you'll often see a live band performing.

-Bond 45 is a lovely, two-story Italian restaurant that features a veggie antipasto bar.

-The newly opened Friedman's is the fifth outpost of this small New York chain. Make sure to check out the stunningly refurbished, intricate design work on the walls. The food here's delicious and farm fresh, with many gluten-free choices offered.

Hotel Edison was a perfect choice for our recent New York getaway weekend. It was conveniently located to all the major tourist attractions-especially Times Square and Broadway Shows-and it provided excellent value for the price. It was great to have a quiet, relaxing home in the midst of it all, so we could wind down after a full day of exploring the city.
