A Santa Fe-based arts and entertainment group known for creating dynamic, immersive, interactive experiences is expanding its creative footprint into hotels.
The company, Meow Wolf, has set its sites on opening a unique new hotel concept in the heart of downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row Arts District.
The just-announced property, being created in partnership with True North Studios, will be both a hotel and an interactive arts venue that breaks the rules of traditional hospitality (in true Meow Wolf form.)
There will be about 400 hotel rooms and 75,000-square-feet of exhibition space, including a 10,000-square-foot music and performance venue.
Perhaps most uniquely, the hotel rooms will all be designed by local artists and will be created to explore “all forms of overnight experiences.”
What does that mean exactly?
Some rooms will feature faux-glamping experiences, others will be capsule rooms, while in still other spaces there will be communal hostel environments. The property will also include “absurd luxury suites,” though no details yet on what will push these suites into the realm of the absurd specifically.
For those who really want to push the envelope, there will also be lodging inside of the art exhibition itself.
“Guests are always asking about staying overnight inside of our House of Eternal Return project in Santa Fe, so doing an intertwined exhibition and hotel just made sense to us.” Meow Wolf CEO and Co-Founder Vince Kadlubek said. “Our intention for this venture is to collaborate with the creative community in greater Phoenix to produce an authentic, local statement of expression which will bring further excitement and creative energy to the Roosevelt Row Arts District. This project is going to be truly monumental on so many levels.”
Jonathon Vento, founder and principal developer for True North Studio said Meow Wolf’s entry into the Phoenix market represents a cultural shockwave for the city.
“Meow Wolf’s presence will give Phoenix a spectacular boost in our ability to work with local artists and to attract and retain the kind of creative workforce necessary for success, said Vento. “The Meow Wolf Exhibition and Hotel will be the new epicenter for the arts, entertainment, and tourism in the state of Arizona.”
The announcement of the new Phoenix project is part of Meow Wolf’s growing portfolio.
Later this year, Meow Wolf will unveil a project in Las Vegas that the company described as “a new narrative universe inside a trippy shopping mall bazaar called Area 15.”
Also underway are two projects in Denver, a third permanent home inside a 90,000-square-foot space, as well as Kaleidoscape, the first ever “art ride” at Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park.
Meow Wolf also recently revealed expansion plans in Washington D.C., where the company will open inside a three-level, 75,000 square foot structure located in the Fort Totten community in 2022.
